Markus Summerer - Photographer
Whilst Markus' close mates at high school ended up becoming a biochemist, doctor and banker, venturing into the ambiguous creative world was a clear and intentional choice.
Being genetically affected by obsessively passionate hobby photographers in the family tree, Markus struck the jackpot landing an assist job and undergoing professional training resulting in a diploma of photography and full time employment at one of the largest car photo studios in Germany.
It was there that he gained an in-depth technical understanding in lighting reflective objectives at any scale, from 30 tonne trucks to diamond encrusted jewellery. His passion for smooth gradients and precise highlights is still reflected in many of his assignments today, be it a classive 60's Chevrolet Corvette shot for a Jack Daniels promotion, the newest Caroma designer tapware, or the latest release of a Taylor's Cabernet Sauvignon.
After leaving the car photographic studio to explore other fields of photography, another area of interest and expertise emerged through Markus' work at one of Stuttgart's best known interior and architecture photography studio. Capturing architecture and interiors commercially for leading home builders such as Rawson Homes and Interiors company Sheridan Australia over the years has provided the opportunity to showcase his clients' homes and products in their best light and Markus' commitment to the perfect shot is well known.
Personal projects like his "Fragments of Time' series feature the ephemeral yet perpetual beauty of architecture and reflect his preoccupation with the relationship between the ordinary and extraordinary. Another example of this is the street photography series "Tuk Tuk" shot on a trip through Thailand. The drivers of the tuk tuks had piqued his interest on previous holidays and had fascinated him ever since. Their pride and dedication to personalise their vehicles and make them extraordinary is nothing short of admirable.
Making the ordinary look extraordinary is a constant in Markus' work and fuels his motivation every time he heads out to a shoot. His versatility and problem solving skills have given him the opportunity to work with some of the industry's best and he has been privileged to work with agencies such as BMF, George Patterson, McCann and Saatchi.
The long and incomplete list of clients include: Arnott's, Bisley, Canon, Caroma, Champion Homes Citizen, CSR, Electrolux, Hitachi, James Hardie, Pfizer, Rawson Homes, Sheridan, Twinings and Unilever.
Giving back is an important part of Markus' career. A highlight of this was a partnership in 2014 with a talented book production team photographing a stunning 256 page coffee table/cookbook on location in Cambodia and in the studio in Sydney for a charity supporting education projects in Cambodia. Markus also supports Global Sisters on an ongoing basis in their worthy initiative to help women achieve financial independence by capturing their beautiful products which are sold online.
